Pre-K/Kindergarten and 1st Grade
In kindergarten and first grade, I have begun to implement Dr. John Feierabend’s First Steps in Music curriculum.
A national leader in music education, Dr. Feierabend in Professor of Music and the Director of the Music Education Division at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford.
The focus of the curriculum is to develop singing and movement skills, and is rich in traditional folk music. The design encourages students to be “tuneful, beatful and artful.”
Each lesson follows this sequence:
This curriculum encourages exploration of musical concepts at school and at home. Please sing and listen to music with your child as often as you can! :)
This music program will set students up to be life long music appreciators.

- Pitch exploration
- Song Fragments (echo/call and response songs)
- Simple Songs
- Arioso (child- created tunes)
- Song tales (songs that tell a story)
- Movement Exploration
- Movement for Form and Expression
- Movement with the Beat.

Winchester Public Schools 2nd Grade General Music curriculum is derived from Dr. John Feierabend’s Conversational Solfege Curriculum. A national leader in music education, Dr. Feierabend in Professor of Music and the Director of the Music Education Division at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford.
Conversational Solfege is musical literacy curriculum that uses rote learning to develop literacy identification. The curriculum is divided into units that introduce new rhythmic and tonal musical notation and follows this 12 step sequence. The sequence begins at rote learning and ends at writing the musical notation for each now concept.
In 2nd grade, students spend 50% of the class time on Conversational Solfege and 50% on “musiking” which is participating in the making of music. The “musical doing” part of the curriculum is also broke up into 4 units, Folk Dancing, World Music, music listening exploration and classroom instrument/instrument family study.
